There is one major reason why the history of Eritrea in the 1940's that led to the federation of Eritrea with Ethiopia is so complex. This is because the UN resolution on federation, namely Resolution 390/V of 1950, was taken outside the political struggle inside Eritrea and reflected the will of the Eritrean people, in accordance with international interests and the strategy of powerful countries. Both of these processes actually tell two different stories because they follow mutually exclusive and disjointed lines. In this book, we have tried to combine these two parallel historical journeys: the struggle of our people on the one hand and the international process on the other.
